Our journey with Jani began six years ago—even before a home pregnancy test revealed my husband and I were expecting Baby #1. I had conducted loads of research, trying to find the right doctor for this next chapter in our lives. We live over an hour from Ashland, but Jani’s patient testimonials were so positive, genuine, and moving, that it was clear her care would be worth the drive. It was also clear that she was a popular physician, and that calling early in one’s pregnancy was key to becoming one of her patients. I was so certain that Jani would be the right fit for my husband and me that, literally two minutes after I saw the plus sign on the pregnancy test, one minute after I did my happy dance, and even before I could tell my husband the news, I was on the phone with Jani’s office.

That was one of the most important phone calls I have ever made. I’ve had a handful of unfortunate experiences with physicians who struggled to listen and empathize. So, during our first appointment with Jani, when she greeted me and my husband with a warm smile and hugs when she asked questions to get to know us as people, I knew I was in good hands. Here was a doctor who clearly loved her job, not just because she loved medicine, but because she loved people. I’ve never met another person who is so well-matched to their profession. From a patient perspective, knowing one’s doctor is not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also has an innate ability to truly hear her patients, to empathize with them, to advocate for them, and to act as a partner through difficult challenges is to feel 100% supported, 100% in good hands and 100% cared for—physically, mentally, and emotionally. My husband and I both feel this way about Jani, and although our kids are too young to articulate this level of detail, if you ask them how they feel about Dr. Jani, they will respond with “I like her,” and “her favorite color is purple; just like me.” For our children to have such a positive relationship with their first doctor is a gift we do not take for granted.

Jani’s support and knowledge provided us with peace of mind throughout our two pregnancies and the deliveries of our children. She’s now the primary care physician for every member of our family. She has been with us through so many life-changing moments and has been present in those moments in such a deeply rooted way, that she takes on a broader role in our lives than that of a doctor. Jani’s capacity for connecting with her patients is other-worldly. How one person has the ability to care so deeply about so many people—to know their stories, and to know what they need at exactly the right time—is an enigma to me. She is one of a kind. That our paths crossed, and in such a rich and meaningful way, is one of the greatest gifts in my life.

I remember when I was about to go into surgery to have my second daughter via cesarean section, Jani came in and held my hand and told me that everything would be okay. She wasn’t even my primary care doctor at that point, but she was so caring and wonderful and everything ended up okay, just as she promised. I have been through a lot with Jani. I suffer from pretty severe anxiety problems and she goes out of her way to find me new ways or ideas of managing my anxiety. She recently found me a book. When I tried to return it, she told me she had gotten it for me and to keep it. I have had to speak with her after-hours about medical issues and she has never made me feel as if I am interrupting her. She is absolutely invested in the care of her patients. My mother is also a patient of Jani’s and was diagnosed with a rare blood disease. Although my mother’s disease is managed by an oncologist, Jani is very careful to pay close attention to my mom’s blood counts when my mom comes in for appointments with Jani and is diligent in making sure she is okay. That we are both okay. Jani is more than a doctor. She cares about her patients. She sees you and wants to get to know you. She wants you to call her by her first name. She wants to understand you. You are not just a patient. You are a person. Unique and cared for by this wonderful, knowledgeable doctor and person.

Being a mom of four children, in varying ages, having a doctor who is competent, trustworthy, warm, and genuine is very important.
